Why genuine content outperforms produced content.

June 19, 2026

The brief for most brand films is built around messages. The measure of success is whether those messages were delivered clearly, on brand, and on budget. By that measure, a lot of corporate content succeeds completely.

And then nobody watches it.

This is the gap that doesn’t appear in post-production reviews. The content exists. It was approved. It went live. But it didn’t move anyone, didn’t change how people felt about the organisation, didn’t make a single candidate more likely to apply or a single employee more likely to stay.

The commercial cost of that is real and largely unmeasured. Recruitment campaigns that don’t shift perception still cost the same as ones that do. Culture films that employees privately roll their eyes at still consumed the same budget. The difference between content that works and content that merely exists rarely shows up in a production invoice — but it shows up everywhere else.

The commercial argument is not that genuine content is nicer to make or more ethical to commission. It is that audiences have become sufficiently sophisticated to know the difference — and that content they don’t believe doesn’t produce the outcomes the budget was spent to achieve.

The question for any brand commissioning film or photography with real people is not whether the content looks right. It’s whether anyone will believe it. Those are different briefs. They produce different results. And the gap between them is measurable in ways that matter to a business.

So the real advice is: don’t test whether people can deliver your message. Test whether your message came from them in the first place.

A brand belief that isn’t already lived by the people inside the organisation cannot be installed through content. It can only be exposed as a gap. The film doesn’t create the culture — it reveals whether the culture exists.
